Writing Conventions
We will study the following six units consecutively. Each unit will culminate with a test. We will cover the first three units for the mid-term and all 6 units in the final exam. 1. Paragraphs 2. Punctuation 3. Sentence Structure 4. Verbs 5. Nouns 6. Adjectives |
Writing Formats
The following writing formats will be explored over the course of this year. Each format will be explored at various points of the year and revisited throughout. 1. Recounting 2. Poetry 3. Narrative 4. Persuasive 5. Descriptive |
Other writing
Spelling - We will follow the spelling program from the spelling text book. Spelling exercises will be done in class but students are expected to practice throughout the week for the spelling test every Friday. Spelling words will be tested again during review sessions. Cursive - Students will learn and practice cursive using a class booklet. Students are encouraged to use more and more cursive as we progress in the year. |
Reading Program
Fluency
Students will read a passage to practice their reading fluency each week. Students are encouraged to read as accurately, expressively, and quickly as possible. Students are expected read each passage at least 5 times a week making sure to balance the three target elements. Students can listen to a model each week. |
Phonics
We will follow the phonics program in their spelling textbook. Phonics will also be tested along with their spelling every week and during review sessions. |
Guided Reading
Students will do small reading groups each week. Each group will read with a teacher who will guide them during these reading sessions targeting specific reading skills. |
